District Twelve

Northern Shenandoah Valley

District 12 encompasses a large rural area in the Northern Shenandoah Valley, includes the counties of Frederick, Clarke, Page, Warren, Rappahannock, Shenandoah and the cities of Winchester, Front Royal, Woodstock and Luray. Our district purpose is to advance and advocate for excellence in nursing practice, and promote the professional and educational advancement of nurses by mirroring the VNA Strategic Plan.

Professional and educational opportunities for nurses are widely available in local medical facilities scattered through the area and a number of schools of nursing with varied entry levels and offering varying degrees in nursing. To learn more about our communities visit local city or county state sites such as : http://www.vipnet.org/vipnet/portal/government/localgov.htm#county ; http://www.vipnet.org/vipnet/portal/government/localgov.htm#city, and for employment opportunities visit the area newspapers, Northern Virginia Daily at www.shenandoah.com; and the Winchester Star at www.winchesterstar.com.

We are within 90 minutes to the Northern Virginia area and metropolitan Washington, D.C. adding more cultural and educational opportunities to already rich recreational and historical environment.

District 12 meets in the Valley Health Corporate Training Center, System Support Building (SSB) on the shared campus of Winchester Medical Center and Shenandoah University. The general membership meetings are the second Tuesday of odd months beginning at 4:30 p.m. The Board of Directors meet in the even numbered months, although all meetings are open to members.

 Message from District XII President

Hello Nursing Colleagues of District 12,

Welcome to the official website for Virginia Nurses Association and the webpage for District 12. For those of you who I have not had the pleasure of meeting, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Carolyn Guinn RN MSN, Clinical Director and Magnet Program Director at Winchester Medical Center. In October 2008, I was inducted as President of District 12 and have served in the Vice President and President elect roles over the past 3 years. It is truly an honor to now be serving as District 12 President.

On behalf of the District 12 Board of Directors, I want to personally invite each of you as Registered Nurses and nursing students to join District 12 meetings and programs (please see calendar of meetings listed below). Our programs and activities are orchestrated to support our District Strategic Plan which mirrors that of the state’s plan. We are currently putting the finishing touches on our plan for 2009-2011 and copies of the past plan are available upon request. My goal as President is to support the voice of nursing in Virginia by increasing the membership in our association and advocating for your active participation in matters that affect our profession and the health and well-being of our communities.

The membership in District 12 ranges from 90 to 106 nurses at any given time. We would like to increase this number and maintain it to strengthen our political influence through active nurse participation in the political arena. This activism includes educating our lawmakers and the public about the healthcare and nursing issues facing our communities today. There are many ways to have our voices heard from meeting with our legislators during Legislation day in Richmond to sending emails asking our representatives for their support on certain legislation; however, nursing needs each and every one of you to be successful in these efforts.

Being a member of the Virginia Nurses Association brings with it many benefits and is the official voice for Virginia nurses. Please plan to join us: together we can make a difference in our district and our state.

Yours in Nursing
Carolyn Guinn
President, District 12 VNA
